The Asteroid belt separates the Rocky Planets from the Gas Giants. The asteroid belt is where many asteroids occur (between Mars and Jupiter). Some asteroids are part of a theory, as if how did the moon have craters. Some might say an asteroid crashed into the moon and left a huge crater. Well, we do not know. Asteroids float all around the galaxy. Sometimes they crash into a rocket flying in space, a planet or even another asteroid.
Some people make a wish on a comet or “shooting star” for anything they like or good luck. Some scientists say a comet was the cause of the death of dinosaurs. Well comets are referred to as “dirty snowballs or icy mudballs” because comets are usually made of a mixture of ices made of water, frozen gases, and dust that did not get built in into the planets when the solar system was formed. When comets and the sun meet, the gas and dust of the comet burn out as it approaches the sun forming a tail.
Meteors and asteroids are very similar. They are both huge rocks that float in space. However, meteors are smaller than asteroids and they explode when landed on a planet. Most meteors are the size of a sand grain and some could be quite large. However, those meteors could be very destructive on Earth. Meteors in space are called meteoroids and meteors landed in Earth are called meteorites. They most occur in a meteor shower.
